YEA Camp | Youth Empowered Action | DATE starts 7.14.13

Life-Changing Summer Camp Opportunity for Youth Making a Difference!
Youth Empowered Action (YEA) Camp is a unique and inspiring leadership summer camp for youth 12-17 who care about community service, activism, and social justice. At a week-long sleep-away program in a beautiful camp setting, YEA campers choose an issue of importance to them (for example, some have chosen climate change, racism, homophobia, homelessness, or animal rights) and they build the knowledge, skills, confidence, and community to take action on that issue once they get home. Campers also build lifelong friendships between youth with similar interests in bettering their community and society. Youth who have participated in our programs report that the camp was one of the most fun, memorable and life-changing experiences they have had, and, with YEA’s support, many have gone on to start school clubs, plan fundraisers for nonprofits, organize a call-in to Congress, and attend hearings to comment about important community issues. Check out our short video or website www.yeacamp.org to learn more about this unique program.

“This camp has truly changed my life. You have inspired me to do so much with my life and to make the world a truly better place. You have inspired me to believe in myself and to not just say ‘I’m just a kid, what can I do?’ Because of you, I have been able to actually make a difference.” -Bianca, 15

YEA is offered in Portland, OR, Ben Lomond, CA and Charlton, MA. For dates see www.yeacamp.org
$975; some scholarships available

Hunger Study | Second Harvest | DATE Apr – Aug 2013

Every four years, Feeding America and its network of member food banks coordinate a landmark study assessing hunger across our nation. The data collected is then used to inform strategy, programs, and other decisions across the Feeding America network. It is also used in policy formation at both the local and national level. Ultimately, this valuable knowledge empowers us to end the fight against hunger in America.

Volunteers play a critical role in the success of the Hunger Study. Second Harvest Heartland is seeking volunteers who are able to help us survey clients regarding their food security.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Travel to agency sites with a lead volunteer and other Hunger Study volunteers
  • Set up the computers and online survey at the agency sites
  • Follow a specific sampling plan to identify clients to participate in the survey
  • Interact with clients during the research process
  • Address questions about the Hunger Study and the Client Survey

Requirements

  • Must be 18 or older
  • Be willing to visit a minimum of 6 different sites anytime between April and August 2013. The client survey schedule will be released April 1. The Hunger Study Coordinators will work with volunteers to schedule sites.

  • Strong Communication skills (interacting positively with diverse populations, communicating persuasively and effectively, comfortable approaching clients and asking them to complete the survey)
  • Exercise discretion and show sensitivity with clients
